Michael Dods Goes for Gold in Mill Reef Stakes

Ayr and Newbury share top billing on this Saturday’s racing menu. The fast and furious Ayr Gold Cup is the big betting heat, as punters attempt to solve a 25-runner sprint puzzle. Fascinating as that contest promises to be, the highest-class action takes place in Berkshire.

Best known to Flat racing fans as the home of the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes, Newbury stages its classiest juvenile contest of the season on Saturday afternoon. First run in 1972 and named in honour of the brilliant Derby, Coral-Eclipse, King George, and Arc-winning superstar, the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes sees a talented field of youngsters lock horns over the six-furlong trip. With nine runners remaining in contention, an unbeaten star from the North East heads the market.

Five in a Row for Arapaho?

County Durham handler Michael Dods is no stranger to Group-class sprint success, thanks to the exploits of Meccas Angel, Mabs Cross, and Commanche Falls. However, he has yet to claim this prize. In Arapaho Gold, he may have the horse to change that.

Part-owned by Dods’ wife Carole and pork pie mogul Doug Graham, Arapaho Gold is proving to be a fine advert for first-season sire Bayside Boy. Snapped up for €42,000 at the Goffs Orby Book 2 sale in October 2025, the sizeable bay has already earned more than four times his purchase price at the track.

Four starts have yielded four wins, including the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes over the Mill Reef course and distance in July. Sent to York for the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes on the back of that effort, he produced a power-packed surge to get on top late. He must shoulder a three-pound penalty for that success, but with runner-up Final Objective since winning the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes, the form has received a boost.

Having emerged as one of the more surprising stars of 2026, his trainer holds Arapaho Gold in the highest regard. Comparing the youngster to his previous Group-class performers, Dods stated, “as a juvenile, he’s probably the best.” The odds compilers appear similarly impressed, with Arapaho Gold currently the clear favourite for the Mill Reef Stakes at a general even money.

Fitting Success for Balding Filly?

The 2026 edition of the Mill Reef Stakes is to be run in honour of Ian Balding – the trainer who looked after the great horse throughout his career. Ian sadly passed away earlier this year at the age of 87, having handed the training reins to his son Andrew in 2003.

Currently chasing Aidan O’Brien in the race for the British Trainers’ Championship, the near £100,000 in first-place prize money would help Andrew Balding close the gap to the Ballydoyle maestro. Flying the flag for the Kingsclere handler is the only filly in the field, Jolivette.

Sporting the famous Juddmonte silks, this daughter of Wootton Bassett wasted no time getting off the mark when striking at Newmarket on debut. She has failed to add to that tally in three starts since but has performed well in defeat behind the talented duo of Libertango and Senorita Bonita. In what looks a vintage crop of two-year-old fillies, Jolivette receives three pounds from the field and shouldn’t be underestimated with Colin Keane in the saddle. At a general price of 9/4, she sits second in the market.

Back-to-Back for the Boys in Blue?

Given his perennial strength in the juvenile division, it is surprising that Charlie Appleby waited until 2025 to win the Mill Reef Stakes for the first time. Twelve months after Words Of Truth came home in front, Godolphin’s number one trainer bids to double his tally with Nabati.

By the 2025 champion sire, Night Of Thunder, Nabati has made a consistent start to his career. Successful in maiden and novice events at Yarmouth and Newmarket, he found the seven-furlong trip a step too far in the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes last time out. His most significant effort in the context of this contest was his second-place finish to Arapaho Gold in the Rose Bowl Stakes. He lost out by only a neck that day, is three pounds better off at the weights with his conqueror here, and unlikely to be far away.

Next Step Group 1 Company for the Winner

The consistent Adaay Of Scarlett and Coventry Stakes fourth-place finisher Cut A Dash are others to note in a race that has a habit of producing a future Group 1 performer. Looking at the results in the 21st century alone, the following Mill Reef Stakes winners all went on to strike at the highest level.
