The live action begins at Newbury with a novices’ hurdle over 2m½f. Sober Glory and Kadastral both won at short odds at Newbury last time out but preference is for the former who has been the more impressive of the two so far this season. Nicky Henderson’s Fantasy World was a Listed winner on the flat and could be useful over obstacles though is too short for us on what will be his hurdling debut.
Paul Nicholls has the favourite in the Warwick Mares’ Hurdle with Jubilee Alpha but we are going to take a punt at a bigger price on Flying Fortune who has been off the track since winning the Grade 2 Persian War Novices’ Hurdle back in October 2024 but has the class to win this.
Dan Skelton’s A Pai De Nom carries the best form into the 3m½f William Hill Handicap Hurdle but is short enough in the betting. Our each-way pick goes to Nicky Henderson’s Alentejo who was pulled up at Ffos Las in January but is a multiple winner in France and should come on for that run.
Just three runners will go to post in the Kingmaker Novices’ Chase with Mambonumberfive for Ben Pauling and Steel Ally for Sam Thomas the joint favourites. Dan Skelton’s Mirabad is the outsider of the three. These small field races don’t always run to form but we’ll opt for Steel Ally who is the more proven of the three on soft ground.
When Nicky Henderson withdrew Jango Baie it left Haiti Couleurs for Rebecca Curtis as the race favourite ahead of Venetia Williams’ L’Homme Presse. Anthony Honeyball’s Leave Of Absence and Dan Skelton’s Riskintheground are the two outsiders. Neither of the market principles will mind the conditions but Venetia Williams won this race with Djelo last year and we’ll back her to follow up with another victory this year at L’Homme Presse’s preferable odds.
In the Veterans’ Handicap Chase, Le Milos is a bit short for us so we’re opting for Guard Your Dreams for Nigel and Willy Twiston-Davies who is a course and distance winner although this is his first run this season.
Nicky Henderson hasn’t had much luck in the big races in recent weeks but Arkle favourite Lulamba should take the spoils in the Grade 2 Game Spirit Chase.
The final live race of the day will be Newbury’s William Hill Hurdle, which should have 16 lining up despite the heavy going. The appropriately named Let It Rain for Dan Skelton heads the market but we think there could be some each way value to be had with Tom Dascombe’s Hot Fuss who could go off at a double figure price.
