The action begins at Haydock with the Group 3 Superior Mile. The market is headed by Wathnan Racing’s Make Me King for Hamad Al Jehani and Karl Burke’s Ice Max who finished fourth and fifth respectively in the Celebration Mile at Goodwood just two weeks ago.
Ice Max in particular was unlucky in running with Make Me A King the beaten favourite. Our pick is Suite Francaise for Charlie Johnston who has won twice at the track already this season. Also keep an eye on Tom Dascombe’s Snow Master who with just two career runs is unexposed and won impressively at Yarmouth last time out.
Kempton’s big race of the day follows, the Group 3 September Stakes. John Gosden twice used this race as Enable’s preparation for October’s Arc and Andrew Balding is doing the same for another Juddmonte runner in Kalpana who won this race last year before claiming the British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes at Ascot. Challengers include two-time Yorkshire Cup winner, Giavellotto for Marco Botti, and Simon and Ed Crisford’s Melbourne Cup hopeful, Meydaan.
The Ascendant Stakes at Haydock follows, a listed race for two-year-olds ahead of five handicaps. These are the London Mile Series Final at Kempton, the 1m6f Betfair Handicap at Haydock, the 7f Schweppes Handicap at Ascot, the Old Borough Cup Handicap at Haydock and Ascot’s Silent Pool Gin Handicap over 1m4f.
The Group 1 Sprint Cup will be ITV’s final live race of the day. At the top of the market is Jerome Reynier’s Lazzat who was so impressive when winning the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot though was beaten into second last month in the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville. The 66/1 winner on of the July Cup, No Half Measures, and Commonwealth Cup champ Time For Sandals are also set to line up in what could be a classic renewal.
