It is Coral Gold Cup Day at Newbury, the second day of a two-day meeting. There will be four live races from Berkshire with the big race of the day the £250,000 Coral Gold Cup.

This will be remembered by many as the Hennessy Gold Cup, having been sponsored by the cognac producers between 1957 and 2016. Despite being a handicap, this race has a stellar list of former winners, including on two occasions by arguably the greatest jump horse of them all, Arkle.

This year, the race looks wide open with Broadway Boy for Nigel Twiston-Davies, Senior Chief for Henry de Bromhead, Colonel Harry for Jamie Snowden and Victtorino for Venetia Williams jostling for favouritism. Dan Skelton has only one this once, in 2022, and he saddles Galia Des Liteaux and Midnight River.

Joining Newbury on our screens this Saturday will be two races form Newcastle, the first of which the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle. Nicky Henderson is this race’s record winning trainer with an incredible eight victories between 2001 and 2022, including most recently with Constitution Hill. Henderson has the favourite this year with 4YO Anniversary Hurdle winner, Sir Gino. The second ITV race from Newcastle is the Rehearsal Handicap Chase.
