The opening live race at Ascot on Saturday will be the Chesham Stakes, a Listed race for two-year-olds over 7f. With very few runs between them it is often important to watch the market in these races. Heading the betting is Moments Of Joy or Aidan O’Brien and Treamor for Charlie Appleby. Slight preference is for the latter following an impressive debut at Newmarket last month.
Race 2 is the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes for older runners over a mile and a half. Charlie Appleby’s Rebel’s Romance is the current favourite after victory in the Yorkshire Cup last time out. Amongst the other contenders is the well-travelled Al Riffa for Joseph Patrick O’Brien and Ghostwriter who ran credibly in the 2000 Guineas, French Derby, Eclipse, Juddmonte International and the Irish Champion Stakes last season.
The third race on our screens this Saturday is the £1m Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes over 6f. This looks as competitive as ever this year with Jerome Reynier’s Lazzat, Kevin Ryan’s Inisherin, Japanese raider Satono Reve for Noriyuki Hori, Aidan O’Brien’s Storm Boy and Christopher Head’s Topgear all in single figures in the betting.
The final Group race of the meeting is at race 4, the Jersey Stakes for 3YO runners over 7f. Comanche Brave for Donnacha O’Brien has finished within ½ length of Henri Matisse and within 5½ lengths of Field Of Gold this season so could be one to consider.
The 6f Wokingham Stakes is race number 5, with William Haggas’ More Thunder and Richard Hannon’s Aramram set to go head-to-head for the third time this season. The Golden Gate Stakes is the penultimate race of the day with coverage closing with the marathon Queen Alexandra Stakes over 2m5½f.
