Saturday’s live racing begins at Newmarket with the Group 3 Darley Stakes. John and Thady Gosdens’ Damysus, who was second in the Dante at the beginning of the season but finished stone last in the Derby, heads the betting. The three-year-old won a Listed race in Deauville in August and is favoured ahead of Charlie Appleby’s First Conquest, Andrew Balding’s Gladius and Karl Burkes’s Liberty Lane.
Wathnan Racing’s Division has shown plenty of promise in his early career is our pick for the Rockingham Stakes at York. Simon and Ed Crisford’s Flying Comet could be one to keep an eye on at a slightly bigger price.
Aidan O’Brien has a strong hand in the 1m2f Zetland Stakes with Endorsement spearheading the Irish trainer’s challenge. Value could be found in Andrew Balding’s Allegresse who showed plenty of promise when winning a novice race at Kempton last month.
York’s Coral “Pipped At The Post” Handicap follows ahead of the Autumn Stakes back at Newmarket. The markets are a good guide for these two-year-old races. Al Zanati won on debut for Charlie Appleby and Karl Burke’s Hankelow was narrowly beaten in the Flying Scotsman Stakes at the St Leger meeting.
The Dewhurst Stakes follows at HQ with the race producing numerous Classic winners in recent years. Distant Storm won the Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes a fortnight ago and tops the betting for trainer Charlie Appleby who is looking to win the race for a fourth time since 2019. Next in the market are Eve Johnson Houghton’s Zavateri and Aidan O’Brien’s Gstaad who were first and second respectively in the Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh last month.
Two big-field handicap close the live racing on Saturday, the first is the Coral Sprint Trophy at York before the marathon Cesarewitch Handicap back at Newmarket. In a typically open contest, our selection is Reverend Hubert for Charles Byrnes who won the Cesraewitch Trail in good style in September.
