Aidan O’Brien Reaches 100 Royal Ascot Wins as Scandinavia Claims Gold Cup in Thriller

Aidan O’Brien now has an incredible 103 winners at the Royal Ascot Festival. Already the most successful trainer in the history of the meeting, the Ballydoyle maestro reached three figures in the Day 3 feature of the Gold Cup. This latest milestone is just the latest landmark in a training career that is already established as one of the greatest of all time. Fittingly for such a momentous achievement, the race that brought up the century provided one of the most spellbinding Gold Cup finishes in recent memory.

Scandinavia Dethrones the Gold Cup Champ

Pos. Horse Trainer Jockey SP
1 Scandinavia Aidan O’Brien Ryan Moore 11/8
2 Trawlerman John & Thady Gosden William Buick 10/3
3 Sweet William John & Thady Gosden Robert Havlin 11/1

Billed as a classic Coolmore versus Godolphin battle, the 2026 Gold Cup delivered on the hype in thrilling fashion. Seven lengths too good for the field in 2025, Trawlerman arrived as the defending champ and represented the boys in blue. Now eight years old and without a run in 2026, the John and Thady Gosden star would need to be at his best to deny the younger legs of the O’Brien challenger.

Unlike Trawlerman, O’Brien’s 2025 St Leger winner, Scandinavia, had yet to tackle the gruelling 2m4f Gold Cup trip or win at Ascot – finishing fifth in the Queen’s Vase on his only previous appearance at the Royal Meeting. Nevertheless, recent wins at Navan and Leopardstown, plus the O’Brien factor, ensured that he started as the 11/8 favourite.

Having burnt off his rivals with a brutal front-running display in 2025, Trawlerman adopted similar tactics in 2026. Approaching the two-furlong pole, nine of his 10 rivals had had enough, but not Scandinavia. Staying on resolutely in the closing stages, the mountain of Ryan Moore served it up to the champ as the hoped-for battle unfolded on the run to the line. Try as he might, Trawlerman couldn’t shake Scandinavia, who nosed in front in the dying strides to score by a head.

It was a vintage renewal which will live long in the memory, and a race which saw O’Brien set a record that will likely last even longer.

Out On His Own in the Record Books

The Aidan O’Brien Royal Ascot success story began just one year after he took over at Ballydoyle, when Harbour Master came home in front in the Coventry Stakes. That opening-day contest for the juveniles has been O’Brien’s happiest hunting ground at the fixture. Winning the race for a twelfth time with Great Barrier Reef in 2026, he tops the all-time trainer’s table in that Group 2 contest. With ten, nine, and six wins respectively, O’Brien is also the most successful trainer in the history of the Gold Cup, the St James’s Palace Stakes and the Ribblesdale Stakes.

Since that breakthrough success in 1997, O’Brien has saddled at least one winner in every year, with the exceptions of 1998 and 2003 and has now been Crowned Royal Ascot Champion Trainer on 14 occasions. Hitting the mark for the 83rd time in 2023, he surpassed Sir Michael Stoute to become the most successful trainer in the history of Britain’s most prestigious multi-day event.

O’Brien Delighted and Connections Pay Tribute

Having received his Gold Cup trophy from the King and Queen, O’Brien was also handed a commemorative saddlecloth emblazoned with a suitably golden 100. In reacting to his latest achievement, O’Brien, who typically deflects praise, unusually gave himself a mention,:

“I’m so delighted for everybody; for me and Annemarie and everybody in Ballydoyle, it’s such a privilege to be working with these people and these horses for the lads.”

MV Magnier, son of Coolmore honcho John Magnier, highlighted the trainer’s dedication and commitment:

“His work ethic is different class and we’re just very lucky to be able to work with him.”

He then gave a nod to his long-suffering wife:

“Aidan is a very special man, and Annemarie is very special to put up with him!”

Annemarie, meanwhile, summed up the relentless drive, stating:

“He’ll be looking for the 101st next, that’s for sure.”

More Records in Sight

Aidan O’Brien didn’t have to wait long for his 101st winner, which came the next day with Precise in the Coronation Stakes quickly followed by Causeway in the King Edward VII Stakes. Victory for Illinois in the final race of the meeting, Queen Alexandra Stakes, meant seven winners for the week. This equalled his own post-war record reached in 2016, jointly held with Sir Henry Cecil. Could O’Brien match Frank Butters’ all-time record of nine winners at a single edition of the Berkshire showpiece? We certainly couldn’t rule it out.
